While doing some freelancing at BBC Wales in 2009 I was given the opportunity to cover the regular, wonderful, VFX Editor for Dr Who, Ceres Doyle; as she had been given an editing gig on The Sarah Jane Adventures.
Lucky me – the episodes I covered were not only the Christmas and New Years Specials, but also David Tennant’s last as The Doctor.
Anyway not many people know what a VFX Editor does and so I thought I’d post this small clip to illustrate. The VFX Editor works with the Editor & Director to rough out the Visual Effects both to give them an idea of whether the timing of each shot is good, and also to provide a rough example to the VFX House that will provide the completed effects.
The rough effects are completed in Avid Effects and you might be dealing with anything up to 20 shots a day, so forgive their rough edges.
In this clip I’ve placed shots from the rough VFX cut with a ‘picture in picture’ of the shots as broadcast. Hope you find it interesting.
By the way these episodes were directed by the fantastic Euros Lynn and Edited by the amazing Phillip Kloss.
