After being recruited to a secretive academy, a group of students discover that the magic they read about as children is very real-and more dangerous than they ever imagined.
If you mix Harry Potter with The Chronicles of Narnia and sprinkle some of the cold, harsh realities of life over the top, the result is Syfy’s The Magicians. The adaptation of Lev Grossman’s adult trilogy is, at heart, the story of a group of isolated and intellectually gifted adolescents who are studying magic at the secret academy of Brakebills University in upstate New York.
CVD VFX, a boutique visual effects shop based in North Vancouver, were brought on to enhance and make fantasy reality. The studio brought the hit series’ characters into convincingly exotic realms and demonstrating the powers that they possess both on and off screen.
CVD VFX used its years of high-end post-production expertise to deliver a broad range of visual effects work, including DMP environments, gore enhancements, environment work, digital set extensions, wire removals, CG scenery and crowd replication.
“The Magicians has been such a rich and rewarding challenge for the CVD team to work on for the past two seasons,” says Chris van Dyck, founder of CVD VFX. “I’m proud of what we’ve been able to achieve and look forward to working with the team again.”
CVD VFX was chosen by Curtis Krick, the show’s VFX Supervisor to work with them on the third season of The Magicians.
“CVD has contributed to The Magicians for two seasons now,” says Krick. “They’ve got an amazing track record of providing solid work that goes back over several projects.
“Putting it simply, Chris and the CVD team get it. First and foremost the work is stellar, and they’re easy to work with, communicative, efficient and fun. We look forward to working with them more in the future.”
